People Before Profit want to use upcoming elections to reignite Limerick’s “spirit of rebellion”

A large crowd turned out to the Absolute Hotel yesterday as People Before Profit kickstarted it’s campaign for the upcoming elections in June.

A full room was present as Ruairí Fahy launched his campaign for the first Directly elected Mayor of Limerick and his bid for election to council in Limerick City North. He was joined by former councillor and prominent Limerick water charges campaigner Cian Prendiville, who launched his campaign for the european elections to represent Ireland south. Speaking at the campaign launch Ruairí Fahy spoke on the need to get rid of Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael in 2024 and to push for a government that brings about real change “2024 is our chance for change. It's our chance to kick out Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael, who have been running the state into the ground for the last 100 years and rebuild it to serve people not corporate profits. It's our chance to fight for a living planet for our children. We have a chance to push past the weak excuses of what the people running this country have told us are are possible and fight for real socialist change for all.” said Fahy Candidate for Ireland South, Cian Prendiville, spoke on the need for people to again mobilise in their communities to revive the “spirit of rebellion” that was seen across the city during the water charges. “Ten years ago, we rose up against the water charges and we won. Limerick led the way with mass protests and a people powered boycott that defeated their austerity plans. Despite this Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil held onto power and they blocked the real change that people wanted. The result has been ten more years of rising rents, growing waiting lists and slashed services. 2024 is our chance to finish that political revolution that we started in 2014. We can unite, fight this government of the rich and elect a left government that takes on the corporate landlords and is committed to eco-socialist change” said Prendiville.
