“Restore biodiversity” and give people “a break from tar and concrete” — Ruairí Fahy
“The north side needs another park”, that’s according to People Before Profit candidate for Limerick Mayor, Ruairí Fahy who is calling on the council to buy up lands that are for sale but not suitable for housing and turn them into combination nature reserves and public parks.
“There’s land available along the Condell Road that isn’t suitable for housing but with new estates and young families moving into the area there’s a need for a new park.” said Mr. Fahy
“Mungret has a great park, but the north side doesn’t have anything of that scale. With money available under the new mayoral budget we should be looking at expanding public recreation spaces as well as tackling the lack of places for teenagers to meet up and hang out. The new sports facilities in Clare Street park have been really well received but it’s only a drop in the bucket relative to the size of the city.
“It’s not just the mayoral budget though there’s money available to restore biodiversity which can be used to create an urban nature reserve while also giving the whole community a break from tar and concrete in the city.
“Everywhere we go around the city we hear people crying out for more public spaces. As it stands a lot of families are piling into cars to get to a park because there’s no park near enough for them to safely walk to with children in tow.
“Recently Limerick was ranked as the worst town in Ireland for work-life balance partially because of our lack of green spaces, we should seize the chance to turn private land into a communal luxury.”
